Cape Coast as we all know is the capital of the central region of Ghana, Cape Coast is a city, a fishing port, and the administrative center of Ghana's Central Region, With the Gulf of Guinea to the south, it is one of the most ancient cities in the nation, a World Heritage Site, and the location of the Cape Coast Castle, Nonetheless, the discussion about Ghana's top senior high school (SHS) is frequently dominated by hostile criticism.

I will like to tell you a bit about the Central region, some fact and features before later focusing on the top secondary schools one can find in this city- The Central Region is one of the sixteen administrative regions of Ghana, It is bordered by Ashanti and Eastern regions to the north, Western region to the west, Greater Accra region to the east, and to the south by the Gulf of Guinea.

Throughout its colonial history, the city has been governed by the Swedish, Portuguese, Danish, Dutch, and British - With some of the greatest schools in the nation, the Central Region is a center for education, Mining followed by fishing which makes up the majority of the region's economy, The Trans-Atlantic slave trade is commemorated in the well-known heritage monuments Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle- With some of Ghana's most pristine beaches and national parks, the Central Region is a key hub for tourism (Kakum National Park)

Aggrey Mem. A.M.E.Zion Snr. High ;

The late Rev. Dr. A. W. E. Appiah founded A.M.E. Zion Senior High School on January 22, 1940, with six boys- Aggrey Memorial College is named in honor of his late uncle, Dr. J. E. Kwegyir Aggrey, By creating a facility that would provide young boys and girls with a quality secondary education that would prepare them for higher fields of study, he hoped to honor the memory of his uncle, Thus, the school serves as a living memorial to Dr. Kwegyir Aggrey, a great son of Africa. The school is situated on the Cape Coast-Takoradi highway. Aggrey Memorial has two locations that are separated by a road, with the boys' and girls' sites connected by an underground passageway.


Mfantsiman Girls Senior High

Mfantsiman Girls' Secondary School was formerly known as Saltpond Girls' Secondary School. The name was changed to Mfantsiman when the District of Saltpond became the District of Mfantsiman. The school was founded by the late Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah in 1960, President of the First Republic of Ghana as a special gesture of appreciation to the people of Saltpond for the part the town played in the political history of the country. His aim was to empower girls in the area and in addition establish a Polytechnic for girls. It started with 70 girls and 4 teachers including the Headmistress. The school’s motto is “Obra nye woara abo”.

 

Ghana National College;
Dr. Kwame Nkrumah founded Ghana National College as his first institution of higher learning. It is situated in Cape Coast on the Menya Menwu Hills. During a time of self-government protests in the then-Gold Coast, Ghana National College was founded on July 16, 1948, in Cape Coast. Strangely, it was given the name Ghana National College nine years before Ghana and The Gold Coast both gained independence in 1957.


Adisadel College.

The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (S.P.G.) established Adisadel College, an Anglican senior high school, on January 4, 1910. Formerly known as S.P.G. Grammar School, the school is located on a hill just north of Cape Coast, Ghana, with stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean. The name was changed to St. Nicholas Grammar School in 1924, and once the school moved to its current location, it underwent another name change, this time to ADISADEL COLLEGE. The Latin slogan "Val Primus, Vel Com Primis," which translates to "Either the first or with the first," captures the competitive spirit of Adisadel students.

St. Augustine's College.

St. Augustine’s College started at Amisano, a village near Elmina, in 1930 - The Roman Catholic institution was established to serve as a training college and seminary. The school was named after St. Augustine of Hippo (354 -430), The motto of the college is Omnia Vincit Labor, meaning “Perseverance conquers all”, It is the first catholic institution in the training of male teachers, It is also the first catholic second cycle school (senior high school) to be built in Gold Coast, (now Ghana).


Wesley Girls Senior High

A government-assisted girls’ Methodist school with a strong Methodist tradition. Founded, in 1836 by the wife of the second Methodist missionary to the Gold Coast, Mrs Harriet Wrigley, it provides holistic education and believes that every girl is special and has her own contributions to make. The hard-working staff of the Wesley Girls Senior High School strive to inculcate the core values of Integrity, Respect, Sacrifice, Discipline, Intelligence, Service and Godliness in the girls while both staff and students endeavor to live out the school motto to: ‘Live Pure, Speak True, Right Wrong, and Follow the King.’ It has nine houses most of which are named after past Headmistresses of the school.


Mfantsipim Senior High School

Mfantsipim Senior High School Mfantsipim Senior High School is a Methodist secondary school in Cape Coast, Ghana. It is the first secondary school to be established in the Gold Coast, as Wesleyan High School, founded on 3 April 1876. “Mfantsefoapem”, literally meaning “thousands of Fantes” but actually meaning “the gathering of hosts of scholars for change” originally by Fantes. In July of the same year the two schools were merged under the control of the Methodist church, keeping the name Mfantsipim. In 1931, it moved to its present location at Kwabotwe Hill
